Intramuros known as the "Walled City" was once the seat of the Spanish Government during the Spanish colonial Period. Intramuros is the oldest district and historic part of the capital city Manila in Philippines." Intramuros" (the term is derived from a Latin word) the walled part of Manila, means "within the walls"; " districts beyond the walls of Manila, "Extramuros" means "outside the walls". The motto is: "Distinguished and ever loyal city of Manila." In 16th century Spanish Government Spanish Colonial Government began the construction of the walls to protect the city from Foreign invaders.In the year 2010 Global Heritage Fund titled in the report "Saving Our Vanishing Heritage" listed Intramuros as as one of the 12 world Heritage sites "on the edge" of irreparable loss and destruction and pointed out the need of managing and developing the site.
